The Greatest Profession
"I'm just going to close my classroom door and
concentrate on my kids!" How many times have I heard that from
teachers? How many times have I said that myself in my 20-year teaching
career when I've been frustrated with tests and policies and
bureacracy?
Closing one's classroom door and ignoring the world
around is no longer a viable option. The world is knocking on our door,
and we must answer. I truly believe that teachers will be the reason
American education rises to the top in the world. I teach it, I believe
it, and it is the philosophy on which I am building my
company: honoring and valuing devoted teachers. We have what it
takes: determination, resilience, intelligence, and most importantly,
the love of children, big and small, and a desire to produce global
citizens who will make a difference in our and their future.
Our own worst enemy is our lack of compassion--not for
the kids -- for each other. We must work together. We must take care
of each other. We must honor and value our profession and the teachers
who work among us.
Work hard, learn as much as possible, open your heart and mind to new ideas, and let's change the world!
And, finally, don't feel alone in your classroom. I'm
here for you. And so are others. Ask questions about situations in
the classroom where you would like guidance. Relationships with
parents, students, colleagues, administration; curriculum ideas and
strategies for immediate results. This is not a place to complain. This
is not a forum. This is a place to find solutions. If I don't have the
answer, I assure you I have the friends and colleagues in the industry
who do.
